House with the Circular Garden

1991 Karuisawa,Japan

Setting the circular arc like an earthenware mortar in skirts of Mt. Asama’s gentle slope using the dent of the site has become a start of this house. Tracks of circle entered the long and slender building, and it has become an arched living room. The sliding door is installed in front of the living room so that it can be opened up completely. The living room looked from a round garden looks like the stage cut out in the proscenium. The curved earthen wall --- partially swallowing the piano and fire place, the television and twining around the kitchen and staircase --- becomes an important backdrop for this stage. This stage starts from the scene where the hero shows up from the left, and sits on the stone table on right.
